1. Jama Masjid

Another architectural marvel created by Sultan Ahmed Shah, Jama Masjid is one of the top tourist attractions in Ahmedabad. The fort was built in 1423 by the sultan, who wanted it to be a place where the Muslims of Ahmedabad could gather for Friday prayers. It is located next to the Badra Fortress and completes its 260 beautifully carved columns with magnificent yellow sandstone. The building of the mosque offers a mix of Hindu and Islamic architectural styles and the yellow sandstone used in the mosque is said to be part of some Hindu and Jain temples.

2. Sarkhej Roza

A series of tombs and columns make up the beautiful complex of Sarkhej Roza. Like most monuments with Islamic architecture in the city, this monument has some ornate lattices and intricate carvings. Built around a man-made body of water called Sarkhej Lake, the mausoleum is one of the city’s architectural attractions. Most of the decorative motifs are clearly Hindu influences, although its supports and pillars are Islamic elements.

3. Roza of Shah-e-Alam

Ahmedabad is full of tombs that will enchant you with their splendor and ornate carvings. One such tomb that should be a part of any tourist’s itinerary is the Rasulabad Dargah or the Roza of Shah-e-Alam, also known as Shah Alam no Rojo. The mausoleum complex has a smaller mausoleum with twenty-four domes containing the tombs of the Shah Alam family. The floor of the cemetery is black and white marble, the door frame and two stone columns on either side are made of finely carved pure white marble.

Rani no Hajiro, meaning Queen’s Tomb in Gujarati, houses the tomb of Queen Ahmed Shah. Away from the chaos of the city, tourists flock to seek the tranquility that defines the place, in stark contrast to its exterior, which has become so vibrant as the shed builders bunting into the space. The tombs here are not closed halls, unlike other tombs, but open courtyards. These beautifully carved shrines feature exquisite mother-of-pearl inlays and their carvings contain influences from Jain, Hindu and Islamic aesthetics.

5. Kankaria Lake

The largest body of water in the city, Lake Kankaria has been attracting people and tourists from Ahmedabad to the city for years. In the 15th century, Sultans Mohammed Shah and II. It was built by Ahmad Shah and even had a built-in water purification system as it was the bathing place for most rulers of that era.

7. Hutheesing Jain Temple

Built around 1850 by a Jain merchant named Hutheesing Kesarsing, the temple adds to Ahmedabad’s rich cultural heritage. This extraordinary work of art made of marble is extremely finely sculpted and pays homage to the Dharmanath of the 15th generation Jain Tirthankara. The marble-clad temple courtyard has 52 chambers and is the sanctuary of various Tirthankaras.

8. Swaminarayan Temple

Ahmedabad’s historical sites amaze with the elegant and fascinating architecture of the Swami Narayan Temple. Rustic white look awe-inspiring and it’s hard not to admire its craftsmanship. There are nine tombs here known as “Nau Gaz Pir” or “Nine House Saints”. Adara Jibu well is the most famous of the other wells in the city. It was built in 1499 by Rudabai, the wife of a famous chief of the city.

At each level of the stepwell are intricately carved platforms and galleries that look deep into the octagonal well. Hindu mythology is vividly displayed with carvings of deities at each pillar level. The shafts of the well are decorated with floral and geometric patterns intertwined with figurines that enhance the beauty of the well. At night, the gazebo is illuminated with diffused lighting, giving the stepped well an enchanting appearance.
